Granny Square Preemie Keepsake Blanket

This precious little blanket is just the right size for the tiniest of preemies, measuring approximately 13" square. It looks great in a varigated yarn (pictured), or with one solid color for the square and a contrasting color for the scallop edge.

Materials

Approximately 3.5 oz worsted weight yarn
Size J crochet hook

BASIC INSTRUCTIONS : using your favorite granny square instructions, make a 12" granny square (mine takes about 10 rounds with a J hook). When completed, add a scallop edge : chain 3 (counts as first DC in last round), 4 DC into corner space, **chain 2, skip 2, single crochet into next stitch, chain 2, skip 2, 5DC into next stitch** continuing from ** all the way around. Make sure you do 5 DC into each corner space, even if you have to "fudge" a little at the corners.

For those of you who haven't done a granny square before, here are the step-by-step instructions for this blanket :
Chain 5. Join into a ring with a slip stitch.
Round 1 : Chain 3, 2 DC into ring. This makes your first 3DC cluster. Chain 3. This makes your first corner space. **3DC, Chain 3** Repeat from ** two more times, so you endup with 4 clusters and 4 corner spaces. Join square with a slip stitch into the top fo the first chain 3, slip stitch into the next 2 DC, slip stitch into the first corner space.
Round 2 : Chain 3, 2 DC into corner space, chain 3, 3 DC into same corner space. **Chain 1, skip next 3 DC, 3 DC into next corner space, chain 3, 3 DC into same corner space** Repeat from ** two more times. Join square with slip stitch into first chain 2. Slip stitch next 2 DC's, slip stitch into corner space.
Rounds 3 - 10 : Chain 3, 2 DC into corner space, chain 3, 3 DC into same corner space. Chain 1, skip next 3 DC, 3 DC into next space. Continue in this way, chaining 1, skipping 3 DC clusters, doing 3 DC into spaces, and doing [3 DC, chain 3, 3 DC] into each corner space all the way around each round. at the end of each round, join to first chain 3 with a slip stitch, slip stitch into next 2 DC, slip stitch into corner space, and chain 3 to start next round. After 10 rounds, the square should measure approx. 12 inches.
Round 11 (scallop edge) : Chain 3 to start this round. 4 DC into corner space. **Chain 2, skip 2 stitches, single crochet into next stitch, chain 2, skip 2 stitches, 5 DC into next stitch** all the way around theblanket edge, making sure you always do the 5 DC cluster into the corner spaces, even if you have to "fudge" a little at the corners. At the end, join with a slip stitch, bind off, and weave in the ends.
